MIMESIS is a term used in literary criticism and philosophy that carries a wide range of meanings which include imitatio, imitation, nonsensuous similarity, receptivity, representation, mimicry, the act of expression, the act of resembling, and the presentation of the self.

Es un concepto estético. A partir de Aristóteles, se denomina así a la imitación de la naturaleza como fin esencial del arte. El vocablo castellano proviene directamente del latino mimēsis, que a su vez esto no sirve deriva del griego μίμησις [mímesis], y puede también traducirse como ‘imitación’.
